Zechstein Magnesium Oil: What’s Behind the Ancient-Sea Magnesium?

“Zechstein” appears on the label of many magnesium oils. But what does it mean – and why does the origin matter so much to many buyers?
The Zechstein Sea
Around 250 million years ago, a shallow sea covered large parts of northern Europe: the Zechstein Sea. When it dried out, it left behind thick layers of salt that were later covered by rock. Today these salts lie about 1,600 metres below the Netherlands – well protected from today’s environmental influences.
How is Zechstein magnesium extracted?
The magnesium chloride isn’t mined like coal; it is dissolved out of the depths with water. The resulting brine is pumped to the surface and processed further – into magnesium oil, flakes or gel.
“Original Zechstein Inside®”
The “Original Zechstein Inside®” seal marks products whose magnesium chloride is verifiably sourced from this deposit. When buying, look for the seal or a clear statement of origin from the manufacturer.
How to recognise good Zechstein magnesium oil
- a clear statement of origin or the Original Zechstein seal,
- the concentration stated (e.g. 31% magnesium chloride or 105 mg magnesium per ml),
- a short ingredients list with no fragrances or preservatives.
Our magnesium oil ticks all three boxes – and comes in a glass bottle with a spray head.
